Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction
Update VI, March 21, 2005

Our spring semester is in full swing, and plans for the 2005-2006 school year are in the works.

Students:

With 4 Dress Down Days and I-Pod raffles, our student council and Parent Association begin fundraising for the UASDC European Architectural Tour (February 2006). Fundraising will offset the student and chaperone travel costs.

SAVE THE DATE! UASDC, formidably led by English Teacher Rebekah Shoaf, performs scenes from Romeo and Juliet on June 16 and June 17. Of course, students will construct their own sets; thank you to Illya Azaroff at the Design Collective Studio for advising our students this spring. On May 11, we introduce the students to Shakespeare with a matinee performance of Julius Caesar on Broadway.

Faculty:

With Wednesday's extended advisories, our teachers have brought students around the city and to partner sites. This week, Ariel Nadelstern goes to the Department of City Planning, thanks to Jen Posner for coordinating on the City Planning side. Jeremy Epstein's advisory visited the KPF offices to see the models of the Jets Stadium plans and learn about that project. Thanks to Richard Tomasetti for setting up that visit.

Teacher recruitment efforts will pay off this June, when we welcome new faculty members to UASDC. If you know committed, enthusiastic teachers, send them our way!

Theme-Related Programs:

Thank you to Dick Anderson for inviting ten of our students to the New York Building Congressâ event on the NYC 2012 Olympic Bid featuring Mitt Romney and Dan Doctoroff. The students raved about it.

Amy Hitchcoff at the New York Foundation for Architecture has led a fantastic program on subway entrance design for 12 students. The program culminates in presentations to leaders in the field on March 29, and the studentsâ models will be on display at the Center for Architecture beginning in May.

Joe Tonetti welcomed a few of our students to a construction project site in the Bronx.

Best quote from the students who walked through the Central Park Gates: "Ms. Weinstein, these aren't gates they are big orange flags." UASDC kids are nothing if not observant.

Thank you to the firms and engineers who hosted our students during the February vacation: Greg Kelly and Mike Barbagallo at Parsons Brinckerhoff; Joe McGough at Daniel Frankfurt; and Sam Schwartz at Sam Schwartz LLC. Our appreciation also goes to Christina Vastola from the Urban Assembly and our PA President, Brynne Clarke Ferguson for accompanying our students on a tour of NYU that week. Christina also deserves thanks for helping to design our March Madness College Prep unit in advisory.

Our academic partner, Parsons School of Design, has jumped on board this spring. Gwynne Keathley, Chair of the Department of Core Studies, organized a great tour of the exhibit of Parsonsâ senior projects. The admissions staff, led by Heather Ward and Florine Demosthene, will offer an information session at UASDC for students and a separate session for parents. Finally, our students have the opportunity to take summer courses and receive scholarships to pay for these courses, thanks to Charlotte Rice in the office of pre-college programs. We are so grateful for this amazing partnership.

Stay tuned for more as spring arrives and we close out our first year. Thank you again for your support and enthusiasm, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Genna Weinstein
