Update February 1, 2005 Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction Today, we begin the second semester. We are busier than ever! It is all trips all the time at UASDC: Advisory groups traveled to the offices of Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and Hudson River Park Trust. In a few weeks, other groups go to the Skyscraper Museum and the Department of City Planning, with more in the works. As a follow up to the bridge model project, we visited the office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to see professional models and tour the model studio. And, we would like to personally thank everyone who spent two hours with our students, critiquing their bridge models: Tony Vacchione, Scott Duncan and Earl Jackson from SOM; Patrick Healy from The Thornton Tomasetti Group; Peter Weingarten and Kimberly Garcia from Fox & Fowle; Patti Misyak-Peters; Tom Duffy from Hardesty & Hanover; Jen Park; Amy Weisser; Jill Slater; Chris Diamond; Nathalie Dziobek; Mark Mancuso; and Matthias Neumann. We will bundle up and brave the cold to see the Gates in Central Park on February 16. Why should we relax on vacation? During the February break, I will accompany a handful of students on trips to architectural sites and college campuses. Thanks to Mike Della Rocca and Hannah OGrady from ACEC NY for introducing us to engineers who will offer tours of their offices during that week. Other programs on the horizon: In March, members of the admissions and financial aid staff from Parsons School of Design will come to UASDC to speak to students and parents about how to prepare for college. We are grateful to Nadine Bourgeois and Charlotte Rice at Parsons for their coordination of these (and many other) programs. With bridges under their belts, UASDC students tackle the subway! Through a terrific program organized by the Center for Architecture and the New York Foundation for Architecture, twelve students will study subway architecture and design a subway station. If you design subways and transportation systems, we would love for your input and participation. Thanks to Joe McGough at Daniel Frankfurt, PC for jumping on board. Integrating the theme through Shakespeare: Rebekah Shoaf will teach Romeo & Juliet in the late spring, and a few of her students will construct a model of the Globe Theater. We are looking for model builders, or anyone with a particular expertise in theater design, to advise these students (a small stipend is available). In conjunction with this unit, Rebekah is taking all of her students to a performance of Julius Ceasar on Broadway. We are trying to think of (educational) fundraising tactics to pay for the tickets. Please let us know if you have any ideas. YEAR 2 If you thought Year 1 was busy, imagine what happens when we double in size. Over the next few months, I will reach out to you to talk about our partnerships and ambitious mentoring program in Year 2. At this halfway point, we would like to thank you for meeting our students, critiquing their work, inviting them to your offices, visiting our school, advising teachers on how to integrate the theme and, in general, enabling us to be unique and successful in this crucial first year. |
