Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction
Update III, November 8, 2004

Here is the third UASDC update e-mail. Welcome to those of you who are receiving this for the first time.

Students and Parents:

- Our Design and Construction team, under the guidance of our architects-in-residence, Gita and Elliott, painted the hallways and drilled homasote into the walls. It was a messy few weeks but we are cleaned up now. Over the next few months, the hallway will be a student gallery of sketches and photographs.

- Our Parent Association has met three times and elected its officers.

- Eleven students submitted a proposal to start a club soccer team, and they have been practicing for two weeks. Next up: Student Government.

- Our next goal is to design our library, and we need architecture and design books and magazines to fill our new bookshelves. If you have any extra copies of books or back issues of magazines, we are happy to take them off your hands...

Teachers:

- Our teachers have the best attendance we°ve ever seen. Apparently they don°t believe in substitute teachers, because none of them have been absent yet.

- Teachers are focusing on integrating the theme as much as possible. Alan Marks assigned a model city project in connection with the study of ancient civilizations. Scott Thomas has met with Sam Schwartz regarding ways to connect traffic to the physics curriculum. In English, students completed an essay assignment in which they contemplated the built environment of their neighborhoods.

Theme:

- We kicked off the year with a fantastic all-school trip to the Tall Buildings Exhibit at MoMA QNS.

- Our many partners have invited us to participate in a number of great workshops and forums: thanks to Ron Shiffman, the Japan Society and Tripod Design and the New York Foundation for Architecture.

- Our architects-in-residence are leading after school trips every few weeks. In October, we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. Next week, we go to the Temple of Dendur at the Met. We are always looking for additional advisors to join us. Thank you to Jen Park for walking the bridge with us.

- In Design Seminar, students began a bridge-building project. They are excited to get their hands on some chip board and x-acto knives.

- On the partnership front, Richard Kahan has introduced us to a number of enthusiastic and committed organizations and leaders. These partnerships make the school unique and allow us to create and participate in excellent programs and events. Special thanks to Richard Tomasetti, who has been instrumental in lining up partners in the engineering world. We are so grateful for the support of all of these professionals.

- On Wednesday, November 10, we will invite many of these partners to the school for our Introduction to the Career Day. This is our debut! Our students have been preparing questions and are looking forward to meeting these influential architects, construction managers, urban planners and engineers.
