Update September 13, 2004 Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction Welcome to the first day of school and the first day of the Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction! It is hard to believe that September arrived so quickly. Lawrence, our teachers, the Urban Assembly team and all of our partners have been working for six months to prepare for today Î we are ecstatic and cannot wait to get started and introduce students to their new high school. Student Support and Activities In July and August, our advisors met with their advisees in one-on-one interviews. Students toured the school, and teachers became better acquainted with their students. We will be working with ACE Mentor Program to encourage students to apply for the mentor program. ACE Mentor (www.acementor.org) provides mentoring opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing careers in architecture, construction and engineering. As the school year begins, we will develop extra-curricular activities such as a website team, music club, and sports teams. We are thrilled to announce that we will offer music class in addition to our Design Seminar. So many student expressed an interest in music that we were compelled to include it in the schedule. Teacher Support In August, our teachers met for three days in professional development and participated in other PD opportunities around the city. They returned to school last week to map out year-long curricula and outline advisory class. They also did a great job of personalizing their classrooms. One of our tasks is to pick semester or year-long projects in advisory class, connected to our goals of teaching students to see, collaborate, present and critique. In our first advisory project this fall, students will work with their advisor to remodel and spruce up their classrooms. Each group will receive a small budget allocation and will take on the responsibility of ¾designing and constructing² their advisory classroom. Welcome to our secretary, Nina Pisano, who brings experience with small schools and the NYC Dept. of Education. Her knowledge of the computer systems and regulations is invaluable. Theme Integration and Realization One of our most important tasks was accomplished when we asked Gita Nandan and Elliott Maltby to join our school as architects-in-residence. They will spend one day per week with us, teaching Design Seminar and helping students explore their interest in architecture. We look forward to introducing them to you and to the students. Every student will visit the Museum of Modern Art‚s Tall Building Exhibit on September 20 and September 23. The exhibit showcases 25 models of skyscrapers from around the world. We decided that this exhibit would be ideal as a kick-off to the school year and to the many field trips that UASDC students will take to bring their academic studies. On November 10, we will invite professionals to speak with students about their high school, college and work experience at our Introduction to Architectural and Design Careers Day. More information to follow. We have met with a number of leaders in the field, and we are scheduled to meet with many more. Your support and enthusiasm encourages us and we look forward to sharing our successes with you. Special thanks to John Woodman and Ed Jerman at ACE Mentor, Rosalie Genevro at the New York Architectural Society, Richard Anderson at New York Building Congress, Danielle Smoller at Columbia University, Brenda Levin at NYC2012, Charles Cellura at the NYC Dept. of Design and Construction, Lenore Janis at Professional Women in Construction, Amanda Burden at the NYC Dept. of City Planning, Paul Goldberger at Parsons and Ron Shiffman at Pratt. How you can help We would like to schedule participants for the Career Day in November, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. We are hoping for a representation from a variety of fields and career levels. This event will emphasize UASDC‚s commitment to college preparation. Professionals in the field will make this event a success Î please help us to convey the importance of succeeding in high school and attending college. We want to encourage our students to consider their college and career options as early as possible. Thanks for reading! Please call me with any questions or ideas at (212) 586-0981. |
