Partner involvement is the trademark of Urban Assembly Schools. Through ongoing interaction with the school's partners, students establish a link between what they learn in the classrooms and their college and professional futures. Professionals can serve as role models, mentors and experts for our students. As our students grapple with decisions about their education and future, we believe that it is important to expose them to educated, professional adults who can offer a perspective different from a parent or teacher. Since UASDC is a theme-based school, our partners provide expertise and knowledge that informs the direction of the education and facilitates the integration of design into the academic and advisory curriculum. We hope that out partners see first-hand how much they impact our school community and enable us to bridge the divide between our school and students' communities and the professional world in New York City. What is partner involvement at UASDC? Partners can interact with students and teachers in an infinite number of ways, either through our established programs or by suggesting new ideas. We have developed programs that encourage students to appreciate the architecture and built environment to New York City; teach the basic skills necessary to pursue a career in architecture and engineering; and introduce students to the professional world. Partners can serve as a juror during a student presentation, host students at a special event, or participate in a panel at one of our programs. We also need partners to server as mentors and internship supervisors. In terms of instruction, we are looking for professionals to present to teachers about the design process and current projects, and we seek advice for innovative and manageable ways to integrate architecture and engineering concepts into the curriculum. |
